Communication Between HS and Meadows

After interviewing Meadows and high school teachers, we are wrapping up our presentation and will be ready to present to staff leaders soon.

The education group that is focused on strengthening the communication between the high school and Meadows is getting opinions on the topic and piecing together a presentation to be able to present the problem and get ideas going to build a solution.

Dallas Center Food Pantry

Last Friday our small group visited the Dallas Center food pantry. We saw that they had a bigger area than the Grimes food pantry and that they serve 7-8 families a week.

Environment Group Goals

In our Environment group, we have decided to split in to subgroups based on what we are interested in. We have several groups working towards different goals relating to the environment. Here you can see what each group is working on!

Green house/Garden Group
So far in this project, our group has made plans for what we want to do to help the environment. We want to do something that involves growing plants and we were interested in greenhouses, so we got in contact with Mr. Harwood at the high school. Then we met with him after school one to day tour the green house at the high school and learn more about it. Soon, we plan to start growing our own plants there to raise money for a project we could do at Meadows.

Garden Group

For our project we would like to have two separate gardens; one for foods and one for flowers. Our goal is to be able to grow foods that the cooking classes can use and plants for bees and butterflies. We hope to do this by having raised beds and possibly some help from local businesses.

Compost group

Our plan it to create compost using school food waste (we are ready to buy a compost container to create this). We are also going to hear from a professional gardener to help us know what to do.  Then create a garden using the compost to grow different types of plants.  

Garden Group

We are moving towards a school/dallas-center grimes community garden. So far we have the plan to use raised beds (can either build them or ask the shop class teacher to help), and use a plot of land outside of the school. We want to ask for donations similar to how the pie in the face worked to buy seeds, anything else we need. We can also look for other ways to raise money. We want the garden to be open to the school district.

Outdoor Learning Space Group

Our group is looking to convert part of the area between Meadows and the High School to an outdoor learning center. We hope for this space to be an educational tool for many teachers, and provide an active way to learn. Currently we are surveying teachers and learning how they would use the space. We have also started working with some of the teachers in the High School and a landscaper to further this project. 

Birds/Bees/Butterflies Group

 Hey its the bees, birds, butterfly, and bugs. Recently we have been learning more about maintaining gardens for bees, and making bird houses for butterflies. We also have found out that the high school librarian is a bee keeper! So we plan to talk to her soon! 

This is our small group that is working on homelessness and hunger in Grimes and Dallas Center. We recently visited the Grimes Food Pantry located in the Grimes Methodist Church. In this visit we learned that they are working in a small area and are looking to expand. There biggest need is a bigger venue to expand their services. One of the ideas we had was to work on getting the word out about this food pantry.

In this class we have been learning how we can bring some restaurants to Dallas Center. We have split into multiple groups to decided what restaurant to bring or create a new restaurant.  We are currently in the process of making the menus and deciding what the restaurant is going to be.

One plan is to buy the Wells Fargo Bank in Dallas Center. After we buy it we are going to build an IHOP.  The other plan is to create our own restaurant to go there as well.
